Marie Kondo Is Bringing Her Life-Changing Magic to Netflix—Watch the First Trailer

The KonMari method is coming to Netflix, just in time to motivate your new year’s resolutions. On January 1, eight episodes of Tidying Up With Marie Kondo will be available to stream. The first trailer shows some of the cluttered settings Kondo will transform: A couple needs to clear a room for their new baby, a family had to downsize their home, a widow doesn’t know whether she has the strength to let go of her husband’s things…in each situation, Kondo applies the method that sold over 11 million books worldwide, helping people change the way they view their stuff—and letting go of the items that don’t spark joy.
The internet is already full of “I tried it” stories both successful and skeptical, but Kondo’s organizational approach reaches beyond the home (a fact that will undoubtedly be reflected in the Netflix show). She once helped a writer shop thoughtfully at Anthropologie, and in a New York Times story, a woman reveals she “KonMaried a bad boyfriend.” “…she held her boyfriend in her hands, realized he no longer sparked joy and got rid of him,” Taffy Brodesser-Akner writes.
Particularly after the consumerism of the holidays, Kondo’s new series seems like it’ll double as a set of instructional videos, simultaneously hooking viewers with triumphant tales, à la Queer Eye, and urging them to consider how life might change with a bit of concentrated tidying.
