Viola Davis, Malcom D. Lee and Universal Team on 'I Almost Forgot About You'

In a competitive situation, Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to Terry McMillan’s bestselling novel “I Almost Forgot About You” with Viola Davis attached to star.

“Girls Trip” helmer Malcolm D. Lee is on board to direct and produce along with Davis, who will produce with her husband Julius Tennon via their JuVee Productions banner. The Jackal Group’s Gail Berman and Joe Earley are also producing.

Ron Bass will adapt with McMillan. The two previously collaborated on the films “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

The story follows Georgia Young, a twice-divorced, successful optometrist whose life looks great on paper, but she finds herself feeling bored and restless and decides it’s time to change lanes. As a result, she finds herself on a wild journey of self-discovery, reuniting with old lovers, and getting a brand new lease on life.

The book is a New York Times bestseller published by Crown, an imprint of the Crown Publishing Group, which is a division of Penguin Random House. McMillan is also the author of “A Day Late and a Dollar Short” and “The Interruption of Everything” and the editor of “Breaking Ice: An Anthology of Contemporary African-American Fiction.”

VP of production Sara Scott will oversee production on behalf of Universal and Melanie Clark will oversee for Blackmaled Productions.

Davis is represented by CAA, manager Estelle Lasher, and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman, Inc.
